AIDS Media Awards distributed
Five journalists affiliated to different media have been honored with the Nepal AIDS Media Award-2011.
Raman Ghimire of the Nepal weekly from the print media and Sabin Shrestha, Kala Dahal, Swornima Shrestha and Ayush Joshi associated with the ‘Sathisanga Manka Kura [Sharing Intimate Thoughts with Friend], a radio programme from the FM radios were jointly awarded at the award presentation programme organized by the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) here today.
Speaker Subas Nembang presented the award carrying a purse of Rs. 66,667 to the awardees.
Speaking on the occasion, Speaker Nembang expressed the confidence that the award-recipients will work with extra zeal in the coming days.
He said although the misconception in society about AIDS has been much removed now than before, there is still the need for spreading public awareness on HIV and AIDS.
Nembang, who is also the Chairman of the Constituent Assembly, said that preparations are being made for drafting the integrated draft of the constitution even by settling the contentious issues through voting if the parties fail to reach consensus on these issues by December 30.
President of the FNJ Shiva Gaunle said that the Government has not paid attention to the security of the journalists even though they were socially and physically becoming vulnerable to intimidation and violence almost every day.
Awardees Ghimire and Shrestha promised to take the initiatives from their respective sides for transformation of the society.
At the programme, journalist Tirtha Koirala, Dr. Dilli Raman Adhikari of the National AIDS and STDS Control and Prevention Centre and representative of the UNAIDS Nepal unit, Alankar Manawi, among other speakers stressed the need for the media to disseminate messages on HIV/AIDS control more effectively.
